HDTV Is Not Always HDTV

March 16th, 2007

I was a bit surprised to hear a comment from my youngest son about our new HDTV a short time after we got it.

He had presumed that every program we viewed on the new set would be in HD (high definition), and unfortunately, that’s just not the case.

HD programming has to be created as HD programming. In other words, an HD camera must be used to produce HD programming. The programming them must be broadcast over an HD-capable medium, like an HD channel from a satellite, cable provider or over-the-air digital channel.

Most of the programming I watch on my new TV is not HD programming because the number of standard definition programs being produced far outnumbers the number of HD programs being produced.

I am sure this will change in the coming years, but for now, us HD-snobs have to live with the limited amount of HD programming currently available.

Slow progress is being made. In addition to the great HD channels I get with my Dish Network package, more and more network TV programming is being produced in HD.

Some of the network programs I enjoy in HD include: American Idol, House and the Late Show With David Letterman.

I thought this subject was worth mentioning since I would hate to think that someone would go out and spend money on a new HDTV and be disappointed when they find out that not every program that you watch on an HDTV will actually be in HD.

For some people, it may not be worth investing in an HDTV at this point in time, but for me, I am still very glad I did it. The more HD programming I see, the more I appreciate it.

As much as I love the clear picture and amazing detail that HDTV provides,  I am finding that I may like the color even more. HD delivers the most realistic and life-like color I could have imagined.

I never saw a standard definition picture with color I considered acceptable. There was always an artificial element to it. HDTV has changed all that and the colors are simply gorgeous in comparison.
