On Thursday DISH Network announced that they are now offering local high definition channels in 70 market around the country by adding addition new markets to its existing lineup.
The new markets being offered include Florence – Myrtle Beach, SC; Fort Myers – Naples, FL; Greenville – New Bern – Washington, NC; Madison, WI; and Wilkes-Barre – Scranton, PA.
DISH Network says this new development allows them to bring local HD programming to 71% of the households in the United States and is planning to offer local high definition programming in 100 markets by year’s end.
DISH competitor DirecTV says they currently offer local HD channels in 100 markets, which means they are offering the local programming to 83% of U.S. households. DirecTV plans to offer local HD channels in 121 markets by years end.
It will be interesting with the local HD offerings actually look like at year’s end and see if both companies meet their goals.

Hi Tom,
I heard from someone else in Madison that was having the same issue you were.
I’m not sure what’s going on there, but from what little I have heard, it may be that most stations in Madison are simply not broadcasting in HD with the exception of the local Fox station. If you are seeing the Fox channel in HD, that may be a further indication that the other stations are not HD yet.

I live in ATKINS, IOWA. IT’S A SMALL TOWN ABOUT 7 MILES WEST OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA. Cedar Rapids is one of the 4 major largest markets in Iowa. When is Dishnetwork going to offer local network in HD? My address is above and we’ve had Dish for about 5 years now.
Our signal loss and dependability has not been great lately. Just light rain cause pixalization & loss of signal.
I hope that with everything going HD you are not going to charge extra for the new established standardized format as you… that would be like biting the hand that feeds you. After all, we are looking at tough times in America now. Lets face it technology is erupting, but the oasis of (color) HD created for the images we view on the are remarkable. Price we pay will play a large roll in how to compete in the world. Above on this page DirecTV state that cost.
Customers need to know a good fair cost & not high Premium package cost,. will win real customers. It’s better to have hundreds of millions & not millions of customers. It’s easier to keep customers then trying to get one. Dish Network could be the next IPodŽ, with all the others trying to play catch up!

I am in the Lancaster, PA area. The only thing keeping me from switching to Dish Network is the lack of local HD channels. When can it be expected?

Tom, I am in the Madison, WI area also, all of the local channels have been broadcasting in HD for several years now, yet there is no Local HD available on Dish Network in the Madison, WI market. Please let me know when they will be available, I have been considering switching to DirecTV because they have the locals in HD.

This is fiction. I live in Northeast PA in the Scranton market listed above. They have provided only one channel in HD. and it is ABC so we get no NFL in HD, watching poor quality feeds is infuriating after investing so much in hardware. Dish better get their stuff together by the Super Bowl or they risk losing a large chunk of their consumer base.

For the record, the “fiction” is from a DISH Network press release. I’d call DISH Network and let them know how you feel if I were in your shoes.
Assuming you have not done that already, that is.
